More about: MARSHA  WENIG & YOGA KIDS INTERNATIONAL

                                                        Marsha Wenig

Marsha Wenig is a leading teacher of yoga and imaginative play for children. After more than 20 years of research and practice, her YogaKids program is recognized as the most successful and widely known yoga education program for children in the world today.

Marsha helped develop and instructs in several Gaiam videos for children, including:

  • Gaiam Kids Yoga Play Kit (2003 Parents’ Choice “Recommended ” Award winner)
  • Gaiam Kids Fitness Fun Kit (2003 Parents’ Choice “Silver Honor” Award winner)
  • Gaiam Kids YogaKids ABC's video
  • Gaiam Kids YogaKids Silly to Calm video
  • YogaKids video—(Marsha's first video, made prior to her work with Gaiam—(1996 Parents' Choice "Approved" winner)

In October 2003, Marsha’s book, Yoga Kids: Educating the Whole Child through Yoga (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) was released. The Gaiam Kids and YogaKids products and Marsha's book are based on the Multiple Intelligences theory developed by Harvard educator Howard Gardner. This theory purports that children learn through their bodies. Thus, in all of Marsha’s work, she uses yoga, fitness games and imaginative play to help children learn more about themselves and the world around them. For example, as she teaches children to move, she teaches the alphabet, colors, numbers, and other information.

Marsha believes that it is important to entertain children and hold their attention in order to teach them anything. This is especially true in today’s society, where there is high entertainment value from TV, movies and the Internet.

Marsha first became interested in yoga more than 20 years ago, when she studied under Don Wenig, who she later married. She and Don were asked to demonstrate yoga at their daughter’s Montessori school and subsequent requests for classes resulted. Over time, Marsha learned more about teaching yoga to children and decided to develop a curriculum based on the best education techniques she could find. She incorporated the Multiple Intelligences theory, cross brain development theory and other techniques to create the YogaKids program that exists today.

Marsha was a member of the first female graduating class at Rutgers University. After she earned her bachelor’s degree in English and Human Communications, she taught in Los Angeles Public Schools and the LaPorte Public Schools (in Indiana). She also worked for a publishing company, selling educational books, produced a radio show and was a publicist before finding her calling as the creator of YogaKids and Gaiam Kids products.

Marsha Wenig, creator of the YogaKids program
Marsha Wenig, CYT is the creator of YogaKids and the President of YogaKids International. The Washington Post recently called her a "yoga luminary" and her work with YogaKids has been featured in Time Magazine, Fitness, Child Magazine, Yoga Journal, Family Life, The Chicago Tribune, NBC News, ABC News, PBS, The Food Network and other publications and broadcasts around the world.

She is the recipient of the Parents Choice Award for her top selling YogaKids video, which she wrote, co-produced and directed. Approximately 150,000 YogaKids videos, YogaKids: An Easy, Fun-Filled Adventure For Children Ages 3-10, have been sold since 1996. Marsha's first book, YogaKids: Educating the Whole Child Through Yoga, will be out in Fall 2003, and available on this site and in stores nationwide.

Marsha is a certified adult yoga instructor as well as a certified yoga therapist for children with special needs. Through her YogaKids Facilitator Certification Program hundreds of facilitators are being trained to teach YogaKids. She travels extensively around the country presenting this program at schools, yoga centers and other educational facilities. The interest in this program has grown exponentially since she started this training program with 4 students in 1996. It is considered the premier program for yoga education and trainees and facilitators can be found across the USA as well as in Switzerland, England, Canada, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mexico and Italy.

Marsha began the process of introducing yoga and movement to schools when she taught creative writing as part of the California Poets in the Schools program in the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1986. She is also a poet and her work appears in a handful of poetry anthologies. She believes that poetry is a very integral part of the YogaKids program. In 1991, she began teaching the YogaKids at the Montessori School in Michigan City, Indiana. There she served for several years as the President of the Board.

Marsha is the co-founder and director, along with her yogi husband Don Wenig, of Dancing Feet Yoga Center in Michigan City, Indiana. Over the years, they have developed their children and family programs. In the early nineties they conducted YogaKids Family Fun weekends on their property, where families came together to share nature, cooking, honesty and yoga. The Wenig family now teaches international retreats in Mexico, Costa Rica, Bali and retreat centers around the country including Kripalu, the oldest and largest residential yoga retreat center in the world.

Marsha Wenig graduated from Rutgers College with a Bachelor's degree in Human Communications. She continued her studies at UCLA and Purdue University in Indiana. She also holds a certification with Project WILD, an Indiana Environmental Education Program and an Herb Certificate from a year long study with Master Herbalist, Louise Gruenberg.

Her joy is to bring forth YogaKids in children of all ages.

From the Notbook of MARSHA WENIG
Almost 20 years ago, I was introduced to the life transforming practice of yoga. I began to use it in my teaching of creative writing with children. When I had my own children, I played yoga with them at home and in their classrooms.

I know that yoga can be intrinsically interwoven into a child's daily life to insure healthy growth, development and education. Each child naturally uses their body, their mind and their spirit in their journey of cognitive, emotional, intuitive and spiritual exploration. I created YogaKids to embody and manifest these truths and to teach children to love themselves and the amazing feats they can accomplish.

Since the creation of YogaKids, we have witnessed thousands of parents, teachers, healthcare professionals and children from around the world coming together to embrace our teachings, philosophy, trainings and classes. From London to Singapore, from Vancouver to Sidney, YogaKids International spreads the YogaKids message of peace, understanding and education.

At YKI, we pass this gift on with our every breath. We live our passion as we build a community of service and enlightenment across borders.

I invite you to join us on this path. Share your light and joy with our light and love as we grow and transform together.

Visit us frequently. Let your children enjoy our YKids Only pages, created just for them to explore themselves and discover yoga in fun and playful ways. Let's learn with joy the YogaKids Way.

We look forward to connecting with you and your family real soon.

Teaching the Future...Now!

In gratitude,

Marsha Wenig

What is YogaKids?

YogaKids is a unique approach to integrative learning using yoga as a pathway. Reading, storytelling, music, creative arts and earthcare blend seamlessly with yoga movement to educate the "whole" child. The YogaKids curriculum provides children with an exciting new way to explore and appreciate their academic and creative potential. Children learn invaluable skills that set the groundwork for meeting challenges and growing strong physically, mentally and emotionally, cultivating self-esteem for a lifetime of successful achievement.

In YogaKids classes, traditional yoga techniques have been recreated in playful, simple and fun ways. Using the Multiple Intelligences Theory of Harvard educator Howard Gardner as a foundation, each pose becomes a springboard for activities that open the doorway to fully integrated learning. 14 YogaKids elements enhance the learning experience and tap all of the senses.

The Parent's Choice Award Winning YogaKids has been featured in TIME Magazine, NBC News, CHILD Magazine, Inside Edition, PBS, Yoga Journal and many other publications and broadcasts worldwide. Drs. Deepak Chopra and Andrew Weil have endorsed YogaKids .

Why YogaKids?

Children today are under a tremendous amount of stress from school, their environment, peer competition and expectations from the media. Stress affects the way children learn and interact with their surroundings. It affects their health, well-being and confidence. YogaKids creates the ultimate learning adventure while helping youths de-stress and relax.
